This is what unchecked power looks like from the inside

He did not ask.

Not Congress, not allies,
not the crews of tankers;
just signed his name
across a strait
like a man who mistakes
himself for a god.

This is what unchecked power
looks like from the inside:
a room with no mirrors.
Other nations learned it
from the news.

As if democracy
were a courtesy
he'd outgrown.

The seas do not recognize
his decision.
Oil tankers sit dead in the water.

The silence of every ally
who now knows
exactly what they are.

He drew a line on water,
but water does not hold lines—

History does.
